Earth Day 2009

Mark your calendars! Earth Day 2009 is on Wednesday April 22.

At BringMeOutdoors.com, we encourage you to get outside on Earth Day and celebrate the outdoors.  Here are some suggestions:

1)  Family Walk - Go for a walk around the block, walk to your local park, or plan a hike in your local conservation area.

2) Clean Up - Pick up some litter outdoors and dispose of it properly.  You can do this at home, at work or at your local community park.  You can help clean up by yourself, with your family, or organize a work or street event.

3) Recycle Batteries - If you're like me, you probably have a drawer with many dead batteries laying around.  Many stores and organizations are now offering a free battery recycling service, where you bring your household batteries in and leave them in a bin.  Most communities still require car batteries to be safely disposed of at an authorized hazardous materials facility or your local mechanic may be able to help you.

4) Reduce Energy Usage - Have dinner using beeswax candles instead of electrical lights.  Play a board game or card game instead of watching TV.  Walk or ride a bike to the corner store instead of driving.

5) Decide to Make a Change - Buy phosphate-free dishwashing detergent and start using it.  Start using a compost bin, or use your municipal organic waste pickup service.  Start using cloth, reusable shopping bags at the grocery store.  Change frequently used lights to CFL bulbs, and install timers on outdoor lights.

Do you have any suggestions to be more friendly to the outdoors?  What are you doing on Earth Day?  Contact us and let us know!
