Ontario Fall Turkey Season 2010

The 2010 fall Turkey hunting season in Ontario is from October 12 to October 24, for both residents and non-residents. There is a maximum of one license per hunter, where harvest of one turkey of either sex is permitted. The legal shooting times are a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. The hunt is restricted to certain WMU's.
To hunt turkey in Ontario, you are required to take a turkey hunting course offered by the OFAH (Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters) in conjunction with the MNR. Your Ontario Outdoors card must have a "T" designation on it, and you must have a small games license in addition to the turkey license. As with the spring turkey hunt, hunters are permitted to use archery equipment or a shotgun (where permitted) no larger than 10ga and no smaller than 20ga with a number 4, 5, or 6 shell. For a full list of regulations and safety, click here.
There is a mandatory turkey harvest report required by the Ontario MNR. You can find the report by clicking here.
If you want to hunt turkey, you must review the official regulations from the Ontario MNR before purchasing a license and check to see if your WMU permits the fall turkey hunt.

Perseid Meteor Shower 2010

The peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower 2010 will be August 12, just after midnight. Experts suggest we may be able to see 60-100 meteors per hour at the peak.
The Perseid Meteor Shower is named because the meteors appear to be radiating from the constellation Perseus in the northeastern sky. The meteors originate from the Swift-Tuttle comet, and as Earth's orbit enters the path of debris in the comet's orbit, the debris enters the atmosphere and is burned up making the appearance of small streaks of light.
This is a great time to enjoy outdoors and watch a light show from space. For tips on getting outdoors with the family for stargazing or watching the meteor shower, read the post Stargazing for the Family.

Earth Day 2009

Mark your calendars! Earth Day 2009 is on Wednesday April 22.At BringMeOutdoors.com, we encourage you to get outside on Earth Day and celebrate the outdoors. Here are some suggestions:1) Family Walk - Go for a walk around the block, walk to your local park, or plan a hike in your local conservation area.2) Clean Up - Pick up some litter outdoors and dispose of it properly. You can do this at home, at work or at your local community park. You can help clean up by yourself, with your family, or organize a work or street event.3) Recycle Batteries - If you're like me, you probably have a drawer with many dead batteries laying around. Many stores and organizations are now offering a free battery recycling service, where you bring your household batteries in and leave them in a bin. Most communities still require car batteries to be safely disposed of at an authorized hazardous materials facility or your local mechanic may be able to help you.4) Reduce Energy Usage - Have dinner using beeswax candles instead of electrical lights. Play a board game or card game instead of watching TV. Walk or ride a bike to the corner store instead of driving.5) Decide to Make a Change - Buy phosphate-free dishwashing detergent and start using it. Start using a compost bin, or use your municipal organic waste pickup service. Start using cloth, reusable shopping bags at the grocery store. Change frequently used lights to CFL bulbs, and install timers on outdoor lights.Do you have any suggestions to be more friendly to the outdoors? What are you doing on Earth Day? Contact us and let us know!
